"The Trooper" is voted the best Iron Maiden riff

In this week's Wikimetal poll, the riff from "The Trooper" was voted the best Iron Maiden "Wasted Years" and "Aces High" came in second and third place , with 18% and 16% of the votes respectively.

The song is a narrative of the battle from the point of view of a British knight, inspired by a poem by Lord Tennyson about the Battle of Balaclava, which took place during the Crimean War in 1854.

The track was the band's ninth single, released in 1983 and belonging to the album "Piece Of Mind". AllMusic magazine described the track as a "historic classic of the genre, featuring Dave Murray and Adrian Smith's most memorable harmonic riff" .

At Iron Maiden concerts, the song is usually performed by Bruce Dickinson wearing a British army uniform and holding a Union Jack flag. "The Trooper" also lent its name to Iron Maiden's signature beer
